Programs and routines
What program, routine, workout, and set mean in GymTempo. Short definitions with examples.
GymTempo uses a few terms over and over. Here is what they mean.
Program
A program is a folder for your routines. Name it anything: “Summer bulk”, “Home gym”, “2026”.
Example: a program called Push/Pull/Legs holds three routines: Push, Pull, and Legs.
GymTempo does not turn programs into calendars or week planners. You decide which routine to run on which day.
Routine
A routine is one training day inside a program. It lists the exercises you plan to do that day, in order.
Example: a Legs routine might start with squats, then leg press, then calf raises.
You might run the same routine two or three times a week. That schedule is yours. The app does not store “times per week” on your routines. Starter templates show a “days per week” filter to help you browse, but they do not enforce a schedule.
Exercise
An exercise is a single movement from the library, like a bench press. You choose how to track it and how many sets to do.
Example: barbell bench press, tracked as weight and reps, four working sets, two minutes rest.
Set, reps, and weight
A set is one round of an exercise. You log your actual weight and repetitions for each round.
Reps are repetitions. Weight is the load in kg or lb.
Example: 60 kg × 8 reps is one logged set.
Sets are either Normal or Warmup. Warmup sets do not trigger the rest timer.
Track modes
Each exercise has a track mode:
- Weight × reps for barbell and dumbbell lifts.
- Reps for bodyweight or band exercises where weight does not matter.
- Time for holds like planks.
- Distance + time for cardio efforts.
Pick the mode in the routine builder. Logging follows that mode during the workout.
Rest timer
After you mark a normal set Done, the rest timer starts automatically. You can skip it, add or remove 15 seconds, or change the duration.
Warmup sets do not trigger the rest timer.
Workout
A workout is your active session. You tap Start on a routine, log your sets, and tap Finish when done.
The routine is your blueprint. The workout is what you actually did today.
History
History lists your completed workouts. Tap any session to see what you did. You can also view history on a single exercise to see how your strength has changed over time.
Templates
Templates are built-in workout plans like 5×5 or Push/Pull/Legs. Tap Use this program to copy a template to your library. You can then customize exercises, sets, and names.
Workout view (Table and Stepper)
You can log your workout in two ways. Switch between them under Settings → Workout view:
- Table has dense rows with number fields. This is fast if you prefer typing.
- Stepper uses big + and − buttons to show one set at a time. No keyboard.
Both views save the exact same data. If you want a guide on using the buttons, read about the Stepper workout view.
